Drilling into Data
Most charts in AIQ Data support drill-down. Drilling lets you click on a data point in a chart to see a more detailed breakdown of that specific item.
Example: Click on a department bar in a bar chart to see a breakdown of individual employees within that department.
What is a Drill Path?
A drill path is the sequence of steps that AIQ follows when you click deeper into a chart. Think of it like a map that guides you from a high-level summary down to specific transaction details.
For example, a drill path might go:
• Department → Employee → Expense Category → Transaction Detail
Note: The drill path is set up when a dashboard is created. If a chart has no drill path configured, clicking on it will not show deeper data.
Configuring a Drill Path
To add a drill path to a chart:
- Click the Edit button in the top-right corner of the chart.
- In the configuration panel, navigate to the Drill Path tab.
- In the Available Dimensions panel (left side), locate the dimension(s) you want to include. Dimensions is the full list of data fields you can use to group or break down your chart. For example, Department, Vendor, City, or Employee. Only dimensions relevant to your selected Expense Type will appear here.
- Click the + (plus) icon next to a dimension to add it. This moves the selected dimension to the Selected Drill Path panel on the right.
- Arrange the order of dimensions in the Selected Drill Path panel to define how users will drill down through the data (top = highest level, bottom = most detailed). To reorder, drag and drop each dimension up or down within the panel.
- Click Save to apply your changes.
- Exit edit mode to view the chart and begin drilling into your data.
